So yes, fanfiction! I've read a lot of fanfiction over the years. A large block of my time online is spent reading it. Because I've read so much over a long period of time, I'm very picky in what I'll recommend. I don't say, "OMG THIS = BEST FIC EVAR" about a lot of fics. I mean, if you think the list of recs below is long... well, you just don't know anything about fandom. Fandom is an epic thing. What I've got here is so tiny in the grand scheme of things that I can't even think of a metaphor to describe it.
Though it was a long time ago, I believe I read my first piece of fanfiction when I was 12, which would've been in 2000. One of the first fics I remember reading was, perhaps unsurprisingly, Cassandra Claire's 'Draco Trilogy'. Perhaps also unsurprisingly, it was that fic, I'm fairly sure, that lead me into the gaping chasm of 'Harry Potter' slash fanfiction.
Between, say, 2000 and 2003/4, my first "OTP" (though I dislike the term) was Harry/Draco, without a doubt. I also would've read the occasional Sirius/Remus, Harry/Sirius, and near the end of that run I was reading quite a bit of Harry/Snape while I was at it.
In about 2003/4, I started slacking off HP fic fandom, and became completely wrapped up in 'The Lord Of The Rings' Real Person Slash (RPS) fandom. I couldn't give a definitive OTP for that fandom, as I loved so many of the boys that I was happy pairing them up whatever way I could. My main favourites, however, were Elijah/Orlando and Viggo/Orlando, with Dominic/Billy coming in a respectable second.
In mid-2006, I got back into HP fanfiction in a big way. But this time I was craving Harry/Snape and that pairing only. I went on an absolute binge of every Snarry fic over 10,000 words long (I'm longfic addicted; the longer the better) that I could get my hands on. Since then, I've read probably hundreds of Snarry fics. Which is kind of sad, honestly, because it means the good, long stories are much fewer and further between nowadays.
I'm also always on the lookout for well written Harry/Voldemort, because that pairing can make for absolutely incredible fanfiction when it's taken seriously and written properly and in non-typical ways.
Anyway, to the rec list.
Most of the fanfiction I've read I wouldn't remember if it came up and bit me on the arse (because my memory is just like that; immune to arse-biting), but of the ones I do remember (and for ones I find in the future), I've made a list of them for like-minded people who happen to drop by to check out.
